Skinner began his schoolboy career with Lourdes Celtic in Dublin. As goalkeeper he represented Ireland at all age groups up to Under−21 level, afterwards signing with Scottish giants Celtic. After failing to make the Celtic first team, Skinner returned to Ireland in the summer of 2008.
Upon returning to Ireland, Skinner signed for Drogheda United, where he became deputy goalkeeper to Jamie Ewings. The majority of Drogheda United's first team were released following the 2008 season due to severe financial difficulties[1], however Drogheda's new manager Alan Mathews re-signed Skinner for the following season. Skinner began the 2009 season as deputy to Welsh goalkeeper Steve Williams, but took his place when Williams became injured. Skinner parted company with Drogheda United at the end of the 2010 season, he made 37 competitive appearances for the club.
On 21 February 2011, it was announced that Skinner had joined Shelbourne for their 2011 First Division campaign.[2] He re-unites with his former Drogheda manager Alan Mathews at Shelbourne.
